Why Cedar Is Worth the Effort

Cedar is one of the most rewarding woods for garden furniture. It is naturally resistant to rot, light enough to move around the patio, and ages to a soft silver-grey that many of us love. But left to its own devices in a British garden, that silver sheen can tip into a tired, grimy grey, with algae in the grain and small splits along the end grain. The good news is that cedar is forgiving. Unlike oak or teak, it responds quickly to gentle cleaning, a light sand and a breathable oil. You do not need to strip it back to bare wood or coat it in a plastic-like film. The aim is to feed the timber, restore some of its warm honey-red colour and let it breathe through the seasons.

Gather the Right Kit

Work on a dry, mild day with no rain forecast for at least 48 hours, and choose the shade rather than full sun. Hot sunshine can dry the surface too quickly and leave patchy oil.

• A soft hand brush or a brush with nylon bristles — never wire, which scratches the grain.
• Mild soap, such as washing-up liquid, and two buckets of warm water.
• Sandpaper in 120 and 180 grit, plus a sanding block.
• A tack cloth or a vacuum with a brush attachment.
• A breathable garden furniture oil — pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil or a dedicated cedar oil with UV protection.
• Lint-free cloths, a small paintbrush, nitrile gloves and a dust sheet.

Check metal fixings and tighten any loose bolts before you oil, because the wood can feel slippery until the oil cures.

Cleaning Weathered Cedar

Remove loose dirt, cobwebs and debris from the joints. Mix a small amount of mild soap into a bucket of warm water — roughly a tablespoon to five litres. Dip your soft brush and scrub along the grain, not across it. Pay attention to edges, slats and the area around the legs where algae collects. For black spots or green algae, use a dedicated wood cleaner, but avoid bleach-based patio cleaners, which can bleach the cedar and leave it brittle.

Rinse with clean water from a second bucket or a hose on a gentle spray. Never use a pressure washer: it forces water into the grain and raises the softer fibres. Let the table dry completely for 24 to 48 hours. If the wood feels damp or cool to the touch, wait longer. Oil applied over damp wood will trap moisture and lead to mould.

Sanding and Small Repairs

Once dry, run your hand over the surface. Weathered cedar often feels slightly furry. Lightly sand with 120 grit, following the grain, then finish with 180 grit. Do not press hard — a few passes are enough. The goal is to smooth the surface, not to remove every silver-grey mark. If you want a more uniform colour, sand a little more, but accept that cedar always keeps some variation.

For small splits, raised grain or dents, sand locally and wipe away the dust. If a split is deep, fill it with a flexible exterior wood filler, leaving it slightly proud, and sand flush once dry. Avoid filling every tiny crack; cedar moves with the weather, and rigid filler will crack again. Remove all dust with a tack cloth or a vacuum. Any dust left behind will mix with the oil and create a muddy finish.

Applying a Breathable Oil

This is the step that brings the table back to life. A breathable oil soaks into the grain, replaces some of the natural oils lost to sun and rain, and leaves a soft sheen rather than a glossy film. It also allows moisture to escape, which is vital in the UK climate. Varnish, polyurethane and other film-forming finishes may look good for a season, but they trap moisture, blister and peel — often taking good cedar fibres with them.

Apply the oil with a lint-free cloth or a small brush, working in thin coats along the grain. Start on the underside and legs, then move to the top. Let the first coat soak in for 15 to 30 minutes, then wipe away any excess before it becomes sticky. Do not leave puddles of oil in the joints. Wait 24 hours, then apply a second thin coat. Two coats are usually enough for a table used regularly. If the wood still looks dry, add a third after another 24 hours.

Work in temperatures above 10°C and avoid damp days. Allow the final coat to cure for at least 48 hours before use, keeping it out of the rain if you can. The oil will harden over the following week.

Seasonal Care

A well-oiled cedar table needs little fuss. Wipe up spills promptly, especially red wine, oil-based dressings and bird droppings. In spring, wash it with mild soapy water and check whether water still beads on the surface. If it soaks in straight away, it is time for another thin coat. In a typical British garden, that means re-oiling once a year, perhaps twice if the table sits in full sun and exposed weather.

Over winter, you can leave the table outside — cedar is hardy. A breathable cover reduces algae and leaf staining, but avoid plastic sheeting, which traps condensation. If you store it in a shed or garage, make sure it is dry first and give it ventilation. With a soft brush, a light sand and a breathable oil every year or so, a cedar garden table will reward you with decades of outdoor meals, quiet morning coffees and long summer evenings.
