A clean cut is a kindness to your plants. When you slice through a stem with a sharp blade, the wound is small and neat, healing over quickly. A blunt tool crushes and tears, leaving ragged tissue that invites disease and dieback. Whether you are deadheading roses in July or cutting back an apple tree in January, the state of your edge matters far more than the price tag on your secateurs.

The Case for Sharpening Little and Often

British gardens ask a lot of their tools. Damp air, gritty soil, and sap from conifers and roses all take their toll. A blade that starts the season keen will dull after a few hours of pruning, especially if you are cutting through woody stems or accidentally grazing a stone. Rather than waiting for a full sharpen, get into the habit of a few strokes with a diamond file every time you finish a session. It takes two minutes and keeps the edge consistent.

Sharp tools also need less force. You are less likely to slip, strain your wrist, or damage the plant's cambium layer. That matters for shrubs you prune regularly, such as lavender, buddleia, and wisteria. Clean cuts heal over faster, so plants put energy into new growth rather than repairing damage.

Know Your Blades: Bypass, Anvil, and Straight

Most garden secateurs fall into two types. Bypass blades cut like scissors, with a curved blade passing a flat hook. Sharpen only the bevelled side of the blade; the flat side must stay flat. The correct angle is usually between 20 and 25 degrees. Anvil secateurs have a straight blade that closes onto a soft metal or plastic anvil. These tend to crush stems, so keep the blade sharp at around 30 degrees and replace the anvil when it becomes scored.

Loppers and pruning shears follow the same rule. For hedge shears, sharpen each blade at about 20 degrees. Hoes and spades are different: file the bevel on the soil-facing side, maintaining the original angle, often 30 to 45 degrees. Cedar woodcraft is more than decorative. A cedar handle on a file or a cedar box for your oilstone absorbs damp and resists warping. If you make your own sharpening station, use offcuts of cedar for the base. It grips the stone nicely and smells wonderful when you work.

First, clean the blade with warm soapy water and a wire brush. Sap and resin clog the edge. Dry thoroughly. If the blade is removable, undo the pivot nut with a spanner and take it off. This lets you see the bevel clearly.

Clamp the blade or hold it firmly on a non-slip surface. Apply a few drops of oil to your stone. Place the bevel flat against the stone at the original angle. Stroke away from the cutting edge, using light pressure. Count ten strokes on the coarse side, then ten on the fine side. Check the edge by looking for a bright line of light; if you see it, keep going. Remove the burr on the flat back with one or two gentle passes, then wipe clean.

Reassemble, adjusting the pivot so the blade passes the hook with a clean snick, not a grind. A drop of oil on the pivot keeps action smooth. Test on a piece of soft string or a ripe tomato. It should slice, not squash.

Seasonal Care and Outdoor Living

In Britain, the main pruning season runs from late autumn to early spring for trees and shrubs, while summer means deadheading and hedge trimming. Sharpen before each of those peaks. After use, wipe blades with an oily rag. Store tools in a dry place, ideally hanging on a cedar rack or in a cedar chest. Cedar's natural oils repel moisture and insects, so tools stay drier and less prone to rust, and the wood looks lovely on a potting bench or in an outdoor store.

Do not forget the wooden handles. Cedar handles need occasional feeding with linseed oil or a beeswax mix. Sand lightly if they become rough, then oil. This stops splinters and keeps the tool comfortable in your hand. A well-kept handle and a sharp blade make garden chores a pleasure, whether you are pruning a crab apple or tidying a lavender hedge.
